About the artwork
Arrival at Okaukuejo Camp at twilight. We set up our tents in a scramble, dodging acacia thorns in the fading light and running towards the waterhole. There's a low shuffling, a movement of shapes heading off, dissolving into the dust... Out of breath & balancing precariously on a crossbeam, we finally see them. A herd of maybe 60 elephants - the largest group I've ever seen - wandering out into the plains after their evening drink. They move calmly and with purpose, geysers of dust intermittently spouting from trunks overhead as they bathe in dirt, a pod of land-whales at dusk. The calves goof around, ears flapping comically behind them as they scamper underfoot. We watch them until we can no longer make out their shapes over the horizon. Magical moment in Namibia.
