About the artwork

This was a vision I’d wanted to bring to life ever since seeing the black sand beaches of Bali for the first time. We headed out in the pre-dawn dark to this spot I’d scoped out and shot between craggy black volcanic rocks, evading otherwise inevitable glances from the local fishermen. I adore the contrast between the dark sand and Maya’s ethereal beauty.

LeÏla Joy

Namibia is full of gems, and exploring this abandoned diamond mining town was a definite highlight for me. The derelict buildings are virtually just carapaces of weathered timber and peeling paint, with sand dunes encroaching and filtering through cracks, flooding what used to be hallways and living spaces. Crawling through a window led me to this off-kilter scene. I loved seeing the trails left by curious animals and the surrealness of the concentric doorways.
