About the artwork
The characters of my pictures here don’t all know each other. They’re all different ages and from all different places and have different reasons for surfing: for some, it’s a career, for others, it’s a morning ritual.
Places repeat throughout my images as I return to them again and again (mostly by van), and they look different on different people. There are photos of friends I’ve known for years passing through or living in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, as I’ve both passed through and lived in those places—each have their spot where I can expect to see them. Like myself, everyone’s traveling for waves, and everyone here will share a lineup at some point or another, in California or Mexico, probably. I hope they smile and nod.
The American artist lives near L.A. and his artworks are mostly about his passion for surfing and the freedom that comes with it. In search of the waves he sometimes drives 6 hours north, sometimes 12 hours south. On his journey he is capturing moments in their uniqueness. Sometimes he finds what he was looking for and sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes something terrible, unbelievable or hurtful happens, making each piece of Michael Townsend's art a unique story.
