About the artwork
This clay pan nestled in the sand dune sea of the Namib-Naukluft looks like it could be from another planet altogether. The petrified trees are over 550 years old; I love how they stick up out of the landscape like twisted sentinels and the striking colour contrasts between the clay, sand and sky.
Namibia is full of gems, and exploring this abandoned diamond mining town was a definite highlight for me. The derelict buildings are virtually just carapaces of weathered timber and peeling paint, with sand dunes encroaching and filtering through cracks, flooding what used to be hallways and living spaces. Crawling through a window led me to this off-kilter scene. I loved seeing the trails left by curious animals and the surrealness of the concentric doorways.
